WHERE TO
SEE THE TOTAL
ECLIPSE
Not every location in Catalonia will see the same thing. The difference between being inside or outside the path of totality is the difference between witnessing an unrepeatable phenomenon and seeing a partial version. Choose wisely where you will be on August 12, 2026.
What is the
path of totality?
The path of totality is the zone where the Moon covers the Sun 100%. It is 112 km wide and contains 221 municipalities where the total solar eclipse occurs at 100%: the sky darkens like night, stars appear, temperatures drop sharply and the solar corona becomes visible to the naked eye.
Outside this path the eclipse is partial. Spectacular, yes — but absolutely incomparable to totality. The path enters through Lleida (northern limit), crosses the Camp de Tarragona and the Terres de l'Ebre all the way to the Ebro Delta.
Barcelona and Girona fall outside the path. From there a partial eclipse (~90%) will be visible — impressive but without the solar corona or total darkness.
⭐ Maximum totality in Catalonia: La Sénia (98s), Alcanar (97s), Godall (96s), Ulldecona (96s). The Terres de l'Ebre region has the longest durations. Official data: IGN / National Astronomical Observatory.

The 20 official points
recommended by the Generalitat
The Generalitat has set up 20 points with logistical infrastructure: parking, access, security and services. These are not the only valid locations — they are the ones with official support.

What time
is the eclipse?
The eclipse occurs at sunset, with the Sun very close to the horizon (less than 5° high). Choose an observation point with a clear horizon facing south-west — no mountains, buildings or trees.
The totality phase lasts between 2 and 98 seconds depending on the municipality. Being ready 30 minutes before makes all the difference.
Start of the partial eclipse. The Sun begins to be covered. ISO 12312-2 glasses mandatory throughout the eclipse.
Advanced partial eclipse. The Sun is more than 80% covered. The sky begins to change colour.
The sky goes dark. Stars appear. The solar corona is visible. Glasses on at all times.
Sunlight returns. Glasses on until the end of the eclipse (~9:15 PM).
Prepare well
for the day
Traffic
Roads heading south will be jammed from midday. Leave at least 3–4 hours early. Consider public transport — Renfe trains and buses will extend their service.
→ Leave before 4:00 PMParking
Official points will have designated areas. Park away from the centre and walk. Do not leave your car in an unauthorised zone — tow trucks will be active.
→ Use official car parksClear horizon
The Sun will be less than 5° above the horizon. Choose a spot with no obstacles to the south-west. Beaches and coastal areas are ideal.
→ Clear SW horizonFood and water
August heat, long wait. Bring plenty of water and food for the whole day. Local businesses will be overwhelmed.
→ Pack your bagBattery and connectivity
Bring a charged power bank. Mobile networks will be saturated. Download offline maps before you leave. Use SMS instead of WhatsApp if you need to contact someone.
→ Offline maps + SMSStay afterwards
Return traffic will be the worst. Stay 45–60 min extra. August 12–13 is also the peak of the Perseids meteor shower — two spectacles in one night.

August 12
August in the Terres de l'Ebre and Camp de Tarragona is statistically one of the clearest months of the year in Catalonia. The odds of clear skies are high — but not guaranteed.
Check the specific forecast 3–5 days before the eclipse. If clouds are expected, consider moving to another municipality in the path with a better forecast.
Glasses on
at all
times
Looking at the Sun without protection can cause permanent blindness in less than a second. Use ISO 12312-2 certified glasses throughout the entire eclipse, without exception.
