On August 12, 2026, the Moon will cover the Sun for approximately 90 seconds over Catalonia. There is one factor no astronomer can control: clouds. And in August, in the northeastern Mediterranean, clouds have something to say. Here is what the real data tells us — and what you can do to avoid leaving it to chance.
What AEMET's data tells us
Spain's national weather agency AEMET cannot predict the weather for a specific day two months in advance. But it has published something more valuable: a climatological analysis based on 15 years of real data — cloud cover recorded between 2010 and 2025 for August 11, 12 and 13, during the eclipse's time window.
The analysis combines the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis with satellite cloud cover observations using Cloud Mask. This is not a forecast for August 12 — it is a climatic compass based on the historical behaviour of August across the totality band.

Northern Spain — the Cantabrian coast, Galicia, the Basque Country — shows between 30% and 50% probability of clear skies. Catalonia, however, is in a considerably better position.
Catalonia: opportunity zone, not maximum risk
Climatological data shows clear differences within the totality band itself. Catalonia is not the Cantabrian coast — and within Catalonia, the northern coastline and the southern interior are not the same either.
Summer thunderstorms in inland Tarragona and southern Lleida are convective: they build from daytime heat and typically discharge in the afternoon, before 8:00 PM. Totality hits at 8:29 PM. That time margin matters — and it favours Catalonia over the rest of the totality band.
The factor that changes everything: the Sun will be below 5 degrees
This eclipse has a peculiarity that sets it apart from almost every historical eclipse observed in Europe: it will happen with the Sun grazing the horizon. Unlike eclipses with the Sun high in the sky — where you need dense cloud across the entire sky to ruin the view — here a single band of low cloud or haze on the western horizon is enough.
The Moon begins to cover the Sun. The Sun is still around 12° above the horizon. ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses are required to observe safely.
The Sun descends rapidly. Any bank of low cloud on the western horizon becomes a direct threat. This is the moment to assess whether repositioning is necessary.
The Sun is completely covered by the Moon. The Sun is less than 5° above the horizon. The solar corona is visible. You may remove the filter from your mobile camera.
The Sun reappears. Replace the camera filter immediately. The final partial phase continues for a few more minutes before sunset.
The eclipse will begin in Spain around 7:30 PM CEST and totality will occur between approximately 8:26 and 8:33 PM CEST, with the Sun very low on the horizon. Any low cloud or coastal haze can be enough to erase the most anticipated moment.

The invisible risk: Saharan dust
Beyond clouds, there is a second factor to watch in Catalonia during August: Saharan dust intrusions. They do not prevent you from seeing the eclipse, but they can reduce the sharpness of the solar corona and the visual contrast of the phenomenon.
In August, air masses laden with dust from North Africa are common over the western Mediterranean. Suspended dust acts as a diffuse filter that dims the horizon colours and can reduce the dramatic impact of totality.

The smart strategy: choose your spot with room to move
The eclipse lasts 90 seconds. You make the location decision weeks in advance — but the tactical execution happens on the day itself. Here is the strategy we recommend:
Choose your municipality now. Not based on comfort or accommodation, but on two criteria: maximum totality duration and highest historical probability of clear sky. Southern Tarragona and Terra Alta combine both factors better than any other zone in Catalonia.
Have a Plan B within 30 minutes. Identify two or three alternative municipalities in a direction perpendicular to the coast. If the eclipse day dawns with low cloud at your chosen spot, a 20–30 km drive could be the difference between seeing it and missing it.
Watch the western horizon, not the whole sky. With the Sun less than 5° high, only what sits in that 10–15° band above the western horizon matters. An overcast zenith does not stop you from seeing the eclipse if the western horizon is clear.
